万燈の輝く夜に

愛知県刈谷市総合文化センター開館記念公演実行委員会委嘱による音楽劇。地元刈谷市に受け継がれている「万燈祭」をテーマに、家族の絆の大切さと故郷への思いを物語る。

Night of the Shining Mando is an operetta commissioned by the Kariya Educational Committee as a part of the opening events for the new cultural center in Kariya, Japan. The operetta is a story based on the traditional Mando festival. Mando refers to giant lanterns made with paper inside a bamboo frame that have been an important part of the artistic heritage in Kariya since 1757. People living there believe that miracles happen during the annual Mando Festival. In this piece, I embedded an orally transmitted folk tune and used it in the musical accompaniment of the Mando festival. Because of the nature of collaborative work with local people, the operetta involved about three hundred professional and amateur musicians and volunteers living in the city. It was premiered on June 26th, 2010 and subsequently performed on June 27th, and July 3rd and 4th at the Kariya Cultural Center. Libretto and texts are by Seikoh Iyoda.
