Sang Hwa  (Viol Consort)

神戸愉樹美ビオラ・ダ・ガンバ合奏団の委嘱作品。４楽章形式で、ひとつひとつの短い楽章を可憐な花に見立て、夫々に特徴的なテクニックや音色を用い、ガンバ特有の音楽性を表現しようと試みた。韓国在住の友人、高圭美氏に捧げた曲である。

Review: ”One of the most pleasant surprises of the afternoon was a work entitled Sang Hwa by young Japanese composer Yoko Sato. Sato fully exploits the capacity for the viols, including chordal passages, strumming, various other pizzicato techniques and a variety of bowings, all expertly executed by the consort. Her melodic vocabulary, coupled with the extended instrumental techniques, creates an Asian atmosphere, evoking images of a koto played in a peaceful garden, especially in the second movement.” (“Fine Old Strings” by Rebekah Ahrendt, Chamber Music Review)
